Leigh and I share a look as she listens to our shameless caterwauling. None of us particularly care about singing in tune; happy to simply make noise. After the song is over and the work is done, it’s finally time for business.

Rory puts on his hat. “I’m off. The docks won’t run themselves.” He nods toward me. “Mickey.”

“Eamon,” I tell the boy. “Go with Desmond today. Help him search.”

Leigh looks between us. “Search for what?”

Desmond slips on a dark wool coat and drapes a scarf around his shoulders. “I’ve a wayward brother to locate.”

Eamon quickly tags after him, hopping on one foot as he struggles with his shoe. “Wait, wait, wait! I’m comin’!”

“Hurry up, lad.”

When it’s just Leigh and me, I grab for my things, but she skirts in front of me. “Oh no, you don’t.”

Arching a brow, I motion to the door. “You realize I could just run right past you, and you wouldn’t be able to stop or even see me, right?”

“This isn’t 1950.” Leigh’s exasperation is palpable. She folds her arms. “I’m not going to be left at home like a little obedient housewife.”

Teasing her is too easy. I lean over her and steal a kiss. “Already thinking about marrying me? A bit sudden, don’t you think? I need some time to consider. I mean, you didn’t get down on one knee, I don’t see a ring—”

“Stop! That’s not what I meant, Michael. I’m serious.” Leigh’s cheeks darken, and she laughs away my comments. “You said you have a meeting today, and you said you’d explain. I can’t imagine it’s a normal meeting, with charts and reports.”

“It’s not,” I reply. “It’s . . . ” I pause, uncertain as to how much I should reveal.

“I know there’s still a lot we need to talk about,” Leigh continues. “Halloween was only four days ago, and so much has happened. I’m beginning to understand and accept that part of you being who and what you are means you’re always on the move. But I’m part of this now, and I’d like to come with you.”

“What?” I scoff. “No. Absolutely not. Out of the question.”

“Why not?”

“It’s too dangerous.” I frown. “The sort I’m meeting with aren’t businessmen on holiday. You have to understand that. You’re . . . fragile.”

That came out wrong. Her hackles are up in an instant. “Sorry, I’m what?”

“Compared to me and the others,” I continue. “You are.”

“Because I’m a woman?”

“No! Don’t start with that,” I reply. “Because you’re human, Leigh, and we’re not. Not anymore. It’s harder for them to kill me, but one wrong move, and I could lose you.” I wrap my arm around her. She lets out a long sigh. “I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if anything happened to you. I’d lose my mind.”

“I know,” she mutters. “I know, and I can’t argue with you, but I absolutely hate being left out of things. At least tell me where you’re going?”

“The North End.”

“The North End?” Leigh slings her handbag over her head.
